Literature Text

The wind is the first thing Brandon becomes aware of as he slowly emerges from unconsciousness. It howls in his ears, assaults his skin, and chills his very being to the core. As his thoughts return to him, Brandon remembers what had transpired mere minutes ago. Or was it hours? Days? The portal, Jeremy losing his grip, both of them taken by the void.

Brandon’s eyes snap open and he wakes up in earnest, feeling nothing but the stinging, clawing cold. As he uncontrollably shivers, his body instinctively trying to generate motion and heat, he looks around. The mountains before him are blanketed in snow, and more continues to fall from the gray skies above. Looking down, he sees that he is laying in a crater about two feet deep. It is clear that he had fallen from quite a height; fortunately, the soft snow had cushioned his fall. But impact injuries are the least of his problems. Clothed in only a purple T-shirt and shorts, his entire body is exposed to the violent cold, and to make matters worse, night gathers.

“HELLO! IS ANYONE THERE?!” Brandon shouts, using his hands to amplify his voice. His yell echoes through the frozen, desolate mountains. This snowy world is quiet, but this is not a peaceful quiet. This silence is empty, isolating, smothering. Besides the fading sound of his cry and the frigid gales that pierce every bone in his body, Brandon hears nothing. As his eyes pour over every feature of the mountains, desperately searching for shelter, Brandon comes to a startling realization: he’s been here before. This is the Tabantha Frontier, one of the coldest places in Hyrule.

‘How is this possible?’ Brandon wonders as a terrible numbness starts to overtake him. ‘This is Hyrule. But… how… why…’ He falls to the ground, the snow smothering him in its embrace. Barely alive and feeling his body shutting down to protect his vital functions, he murmurs:

“S-s-someone p-please h-e-l-p.” Brandon’s eyes close and he feels his thoughts leave him once more.

‘Brandon. Brandon.’

Not sure if it’s a hallucination of his dying mind, though not truly caring, Brandon cries in a hoarse voice:

“I-I am here,” the glimmer of hope giving him some strength.

“Brandon, a great destiny lies before you. It is why you were brought here," a voice, clearly female, replies.

‘Destiny? What kind of “great destiny” is freezing to death?’ Brandon thinks skeptically.

"W-who are you?" Brandon shouts, life returning to his form.

"You know who I am. Mine is the name of the Legend you love. I am the Goddess whose blessings allowed the First King to slay Demise. I am Zelda." Brandon opens his eyes in shock. How could Zelda be talking to him?

“But what is my destiny? Why am I here?” Brandon asks the disembodied voice.

"Brandon, my Chosen Hero has at last awakened from his slumber. Once more he will do battle with the Calamity Ganon. But he will not be able to defeat the King of Evil alone. He will need the help that was given to him all those years ago if we are to finally rid this world of Darkness. You alone have the strength necessary for this task.” While Zelda speaks, cobalt feathers begin to emerge from under Brandon’s shirt.

"As the Hero has been reborn, so must Hyrule's Champions."

“But they’re all dead.” Brandon says, absentmindedly scratching his arm as feathers sprout there. He remembers the murders of the Champions and those of all the citizens of Castle Town when Ganon attacked. “It was cruel. No one should die like that. But they did. So many did.”

“Yes,” the princess replies sadly and with guilt in her voice. “The victims of Ganon’s malice are uncountable. For so long, this golden land has suffered his wickedness. But there is hope.” Brandon’s arms feel weird as the bones in them become hollow and his fingers fan out. No longer feeling the biting cold, and incensed by the memories of Ganon’s crimes, Brandon rises to his feet.

“I hope so,” he says with determination. “I’ll do whatever it takes to bring Hyrule back to its former glory.” He grows a few inches taller, and his stomach becomes covered in white plumage.

“Thank you.”

Immense power begins to fill Brandon’s legs, even as they grow thinner. His toes fuse together, forming three wickedly sharp talons, which rip his shoes apart, with two in the front and one on the back of his feet. His feathered hands spread out to incredible size, while still maintaining the ability to grip objects. His new appendages shape into familiar wings, colored cobalt like most of his body, with white tips on his fingers. Enthralled by his new wings, Brandon gives them an experimental flap, sending the powdery snowflakes flying into the air above him.

Brandon’s flapping comes to a stop as he feels a tingling in his spine. Turning behind him, he can see a plume of feathers emerging from just above his shorts, fanning out into a large tail, covered in the same deep blue and white quills. He smiles, embracing the task Zelda bestowed upon him. While he examines the changes his body is undergoing, he feels a slight headache beginning to form.

As he raises a wing to his head, it too begins to change. His hair is quickly overtaken by plumage, which coalesce to a point at the top of his head. The white feathers on the sides of his head flow backwards over his ears. From the back of Brandon’s head, four braids extend, two in the middle and two on the sides, each tied off by a green band. Brandon cries out as his mouth and nose fuse into a long, curved orange beak with a brown tip. His eyes become surrounded by a red lining, and two red patches appear on his avian cheeks, while he grows large golden eyebrows which only amplify the look of resolve on his face.

As his eyes change to a brilliant green, Brandon’s memories begin to change, and knowledge of flight and combat as well as his Rito family and friends fill his new head. He hears a voice which he recognizes immediately, that of the Rito Champion he had just become: Revali.

‘We are one heart, one mind, one soul. Together a Champion of Hyrule,’ the Rito thinks. Opening his eyes for the first time in a century, he declares: "I am Revali."

Upon saying this, the purple T-shirt and shorts vanish and are replaced by Revali’s garb. Red armor covers Revali’s torso, secured by a brown leather belt. Beige shorts with a golden trim and cloth pants adorn his legs and crimson bracelets lock around his legs. A wing-crested shoulder guard appears on his shoulders, held together by a clasp in the front.

Revali looks down and sees his Eagle Bow, his weapon of choice, on the snow-covered ground, alongside a full quiver and the blue scarf that identified him as the Rito Champion of Hyrule. Grabbing these precious items, he wraps the proud blue cloak around his neck, and attaches the bow and quiver to his back.

With his attire complete, Revali takes to the skies with one goal in mind: find Link. As he soars through the chilly air, a small inkling of memory resurfaces, and he briefly wonders about his friend.

“Friend? Who?” the Rito champion asks himself. As he tries to remember his friend’s face, he can only picture another Champion of Hyrule: Daruk of the Goron tribe.
Here's Chapter 2, featuring Brandon's transformation into Revali. And not a moment too soon: winter has come.

I wanted to make sure that I got the symptoms of hypothermia correct to really hit home the peril, so I actually spent about half an hour reading about what happens when someone freezes to death. Yikes! That and I listened to the Snowpeak OST from Twilight Princess while writing this chapter. Hopefully it paid off. Let me know what you think in the comments below.
